National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued a notice to the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh over the NTPC mishap yesterday that claimed several lives while injuring scores of others.
Taking suo moto cognisance of media reports about the incident and casualties, the NHRC issued the notice to the government through UP chief secretary, and sought a detailed report within six weeks.
Expressing concern, the Commission observed that a high level probe into the matter was immediately required to ascertain ‘negligence and errors’, if any, behind the incident, which involves the Right to Life. It stressed there was the need to ensure such tragedies do not recur in future.
The Yogi government has been directed to look into the matter and ensure the families of the deceased were suitably compensated through monetary relief and that best medical care was provided to the injured.
In the worst industrial disaster in UP, so far about 30 persons have died, several of whom succumbed at the various hospitals in Rae Bareli and other districts during treatment. About 100 people are being treated, while a few NTPC officials had been airlifted to Delhi for treatment.
The blast at the boiler furnace of the 500 megawatt (mw) unit of the 1,500 mw NTPC plant last evening had caused several deaths on the spot, while scores of others were injured. The blast occurred owing to the purported malfunctioning in the process of burning of coal and evacuation of ash.
All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) has also demanded an independent inquiry in the incident and safety audit of all the thermal power plants in the country, including UP.
