Applying modern technology to the hinterland, Uttar Pradesh Revenue Board has initiated a mammoth project of installing GPS verified border pillars in all the revenue villages of the state.

There are an estimated 1.10 lakh revenue villages in UP and about 8.5 lakh border pillars are installed to demarcate their boundaries.

Now, the Yogi Adityanath government has drawn up a blueprint to ensure that the border pillars are verified through GPS technology for accurate demarcation, UP Board of Revenue chairman Pravir Kumar told Politics Insight in an interview.

The Board is working closely with IIT Kanpur, Remote Sensing Applications Centre, UP and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in this regard.

GPS would map the exact latitude and longitude of the village borders, so that the pillars are placed at the exact location for future reference and records sake. This would prevent unscrupulous elements tampering with official records for fraudulent sale deeds.

“Once the project is complete, this could help in resolving almost 3-4 lakh land related cases pending in the state revenue courts,” he informed.

The Board is also working for allocating unique codes to individual plots as well, which would need to be quoted in land transfers or sale deeds.

During the course of digitisation, the Board had detected 2,000 fraudulent and unscrupulous land transfers and sales deeds, where gram sabha land, ponds or land marked for performing last rites had been fraudulently sold.

Meanwhile, the rapid stride made by the UP Board of Revenue in digitisation has been lauded by the Centre. Other state governments have also sought its cooperation for replicating the processes in their own territories.
