Kupwara : In an Uri-style attack, militants targeted an army camp in Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday morning, killing at least three soldiers, including an Army officer.

Two terrorists have been eliminated and combing operations are underway with sources saying the casualty count was feared to rise.

The terrorists attacked the camp around 4 am and opened fire while trying to force their way into the army installation in an apparent fidayeen or suicide attack.

Firing went on for nearly four hours. The army says search operations are on. Reports suggest the camp is an artillery base.

Last year, 19 soldiers were killed in a similar attack on an army camp in Uri by terrorists who crossed over from Pakistan. Relations between Pakistan and India have been deeply strained since the attack, which marked the highest casualty suffered by the army in years.

The army officer killed in the attack was identified as Captain Ayush, said official sources.

Meanwhile, separatist leader Asiya Andrabi has been arrested in Kashmir, as reported from Srinagar.

The incident took place at Panjgaon at Chowkibal when militants, suspected to be of terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad stormed the battalion camp which is in-charge of road opening duties on the crucial roads in this area.

The Army has deployed more forces to carry out search operations in the wider area. The heavily-armed militants reportedly fired bullets and lobbed grenades, but were unable to enter the camp, say sources
