Two of the greatest song writers of Bollywood were born and raised in Rawalpindi- Shailendra and Anand Bakhshi.
Who can forget immortal melodies“Barsat mein hum sey milay tum sajan” and “Yeh raat bheegi bheegi, yeh mast nazarey” penned by Shailendra. His father was a military contractor at Combined Military Hospital(CMH), Rawalpindi where he was born in 1923.Though the family originally belonged to Ara in Bihar,they settled in this northern Indian city. However, the whole family migrated to Mathura in UP during Partition. Though,I have no information but my educated guess is that the family lived somewhere in Lalkurti or Dheri Hasanabad areas being close to CMH.
The immortal songs of Aradhna,Kati Patang and Amar Prem were written by Anand Bakhshi whose father was a bank manager in Rawalpindi.The family had their own house in Mohalla Qutub Din ,Chittian Hattian near Committee Chowk in Rawalpindi. As a consequence of Partition,the family was forced to leave the city.
The distinguished star of “Humlog”,”Seema” and “Do Beegha Zameen” Balraj Sahni was also a great human being. Balraj Sahni’s family home was at DAV College road near Committee Chowk. The house is still there but the actual residents are no more.
Zahoor Raja who acted in “Sikander(1941)” and “Anmol Ghadi(1946) was also from Rawalpindi.His father was in the police service and his ancestral house was located close to Eidgah near Asghar Mall.
Actress Shobha Rai was a resident of H-39 College road Rawalpindi. Her father was Captain Dr. B.H Bindra of Indian Medical Service. (Does anyone know about this Bollywood actor from Rawalpindi?)
Actress Leela Bhagat who was also a resident of College road Rawalpindi. Her father was Shri Laxmi Narayan Bar-at-Law. (Does anyone know about this actor from Rawalpindi?I was told that in Bollywood she replaced her surname Bhagat.)
